John Drewry wrote this dance for Briar Johnstone of Dumfries. Further notes from Greenburn Book 3: In May 2000 Jackie Johnstone brought his dog Briar to the Morland Dance Week. (The pronunciation of “Briar” rhymes with “deer”.) Briar used to be an Afghan but he shrank in the wash. Unfortunately Jackie did not use “Brand-X” for the laundering process. Briar attended the dance classes in Morland and attracted a lot of attention from the dancers and, when they heard his sad history, they all said “Oooh Chihuahua!”. The women use four pas de basque. The men may use pas de basque but on Bars 1-2 they should really use “PAS DE CHIEN” : i.e. they hop four times on the left foot while holding the right foot in second aerial position. Alternatively the men may place the left foot in second position for the first hop and then bring it in to third rear aerial position for the second hop and repeat this for the remaining hops. They then use pas de basque for Bars 3-4. Bars 17-24 (and 25-32) are a new form of progression which, in Briar’s honour, may be called a “Doglette” . (Certainly NOT a “Pussette”! Briar would be horrified at the very idea!!!)
