For Colin and Betsy Maxwell of Eaglesfield.
Drewry writes:
When this dance was danced in Morland in May 2003, we did it in strathspey tempo to allow dancers to get used to its slightly unusual format, before dancing it as a reel. I got the impression that most of the class were more comfortable with it at the slower tempo. Of course confident dancers are at liberty to do the dance in reel tempo.
When it was tried out in Dumfries with Colin and Betsy in the class, it went well as a reel after an initial walk-through.
It could be danced as a medley - four times as a strathspey and then four times as a reel. If the dance is to be repeated, 4th couple, in second place, may stay facing out, ready to dance out and up.
So although currently classified as a strathspey in SCDDB, both strathspey travel and skip change steps are listed.
Although the original inspiration is “Maxwell’s Rant” (with apostrophe), the instructions for this dance have it without apostrophe. The alternative is added as a spelling alias.
