The notes say this was devised “To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the RSCDS Hamilton (Ont) Branch in 1994, we funded a commemorative tree in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton in memory of one of our founders, Dr. Bob Smith. A new planting of beech trees was being created in the gardens, and we chose a tri-colour beech because it reminded us of multi· coloured tartan.”
