In 1606 begging became so widespread in Scotland that King James VI passed a law to control the begging. Beggars were issued badges with their name and the king’s initials. They were also regarded as bringers of luck at weddings and carriers of useful news. There was a special place by the fire in many houses for the “Gaberlunzie Man.” Good luck or not, my cats insist on a treat before I go to bed. I have not been able to break them of this begging rituaL
