I decided to give the name Broadway to this dance, as this famous street cuts diagonally through much of New York City.
Music: I originally stated ‘Any good tune’ but later I learned that a band in California was using ‘Give My Regards to Broadway’ - for obvious reasons. I therefore asked Marian Anderson to use that tune when she made the Sunday Class Book 2 recording.

1-8::
1st couple taking nearer hands dance down the centre for two bars, turn once round with both hands, dance up with nearer hands joined and cast to second place on own side. 2nd couple step up on bars 7 and 8.
9-12::
2nd, 1st and 3rd couples set and link for three. Dancers finish in two lines across the set.
13-16::
Half diagonal rights and lefts: 1st man and 2nd woman, and 3rd man and 1st woman, change on the diagonal to begin. Finish in lines across the set, women at the top facing down, men at the bottom facing up. 2nd couple are on men’s side, 3rd couple on women’s side, 1st couple in the middle.
17–20::
Set and link for three.
21-24::
Half diagonal rights and lefts: Again, 1st man and 2nd woman, and 3rd man and 1st woman, change on the diagonal to begin. All finish on opposite side, in order 3, 1, 2.
25-32::
3rd, 1st and 2nd couples set, half turn and twirl* with partner, and set. Finish on own side in order 3,1,2.
Repeat from new places.
Note: The figure on bars 9 to 24 is not as difficult as it may seem at first glance. The dancers on the left hand end of the line in set and link for three are the dancers who stand still during half diagonal rights and lefts. The remaining dancers flow into half diagonal rights and lefts. To begin, they look diagonally to their left. (Rule: If there’s no-one diagonally to your left, don’t move!)
*Half turn and twirl:
Bars 1-2: Half turn with right hand and remain momentarily face-to-face in middle of set
Bars 3-4: Pulling right shoulder back, dance out to place.
