“Bring Forrit The Tartan” is said to be the command given by General Sir Colin Campbell when he ordered the 93rd Regiment of Foot (the Sutherland Highlanders) to join the attack on the fort at Secundrabagh during the Relief of Lucknow in November, 1857.
The portrait of James Moray of Abercairney (1705-1777), believed to be painted by Jeremiah Davison in about 1739, is a magnificent illustration of highland dress - particularly of the belted plaid - hence the choice of tune. The painting is owned by Major James Drummond Moray of Abercaimey and is illustrated in “A Short History Of The Scottish Dress” by R M D Grange, facing page 62, and “Tartans” by Christian Hesketh, page 49.
