The idea for the dance came from the Navigating Officer of HMS Troutbridge, Sub
Lieutenant Phillips, whose instructions to CPO Pertwee were invariably “Left hand
down a bit Chief” usually followed by a crash. I thought about having an eight bar
melee at the end but decided on simplicity.
