In some areas the inner dancers who pass to corners stay facing out, and swivel to face inwards during the setting.

Twice through only!
The pattern represents the Black Watch cap badge design. In some areas the custom is that inner dancers who pass to corners do not first swivel to face inwards, but, like those in the centre, swivel during the setting.
A comment made by David Queen on the Scottish Country Dance teachers (07/2017):
“Dad wrote the dance in 1959 and the first version started with a reel of 4 on the sides, then he changed it to the dance in movement which defines the dance.” (
Note
: in Nov 2025, David Queen confirmed that his original post mentioned “1969”, which was a typo and he meant 1959.)
The notes also explain that Angus MacLeod, co-founder of the Clan MacLeod Pipe Band, was formerly Pipe Major of the Black Watch, and one of the leading pipers in the country.
