Prior to the distillation process of malt whisky the liquid passes through the spirit safe but the first part is recycled as it is not pure enough. Only the middle bit (the Heart of the Run) goes on to be distilled and the final part is also recycled. I learned this on a visit to the Glenturret Distillery near Crieff following the Society AGM in Perth.
