This dance is based on the movie “
Dinner for One
” with Freddie Frinton starring as James and May Warden as Miss Sophie, which was originally released in 1963 and is traditionally watched on New Year’s Eve by many Germans. [This is really an 18-minute sketch which, in spite of its cult status in Germany, is virtually unknown in the UK. The Wikipedia page linked to above explains it in detail and also points to video of the actual sketch.]
The plot: It is Miss Sophie’s 90th birthday. As every year she hosts a celebration dinner for her dear
guests Sir Toby, Admiral von Schneider, Mr. Pommeroy and Mr. Winterbottom. Due to Miss
Sophie’s considerable age, she has outlived all of her friends. So her equally aged butler James
makes his way around the table, impersonating each of the guests in turn and getting terribly drunk.
Devised by Judith Kowalczik in January 2015 and dedicated to all members and friends of the
Scottish Country Dance group “Potter’s Pairs” from Oldenburg who prefer dancing into the new
year instead of sitting in front of the TV!
