Symphony Hall, officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1991, has a seating capacity in excess of 2200 and is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
Symphony Hall (Birmingham)
Birmingham’s Symphony Hall was officially opened in June, 1991, by Queen Elizabeth II. Built according to designs by the Percy Thomas Partnership and Renton Howard Wood Levin at a cost of 30 million pounds Sterling, it is considered the concert hall with the best acoustics in the United Kingdom and one of the best in the world. A dropped pin on stage can purportedly be heard everywhere in the audience.
The Symphony Hall is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and can accommodate more than 2,200 audience members. It is only 30 m from an enclosed railway line, and in order to avoid the transmission of vibrations is built on rubber pads (as is the railway); double concrete walls shield it from traffic noise. In 2001, the Bonn-based company Johannes Klais added a 6000-pipe organ, the largest organ with a mechanical action in the United Kingdom.
