From the book:
Among other things, a girandole may refer to an earring or brooch featuring three dangling jewels hanging from a central piece, a style that was especially popular in the Georgian era, when Scottish Country Dancing also developed. Here, the two lines of three dancers are reminiscent of such items of jewellery.
