Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island (PEI) is, according to its area and number of inhabitants, the smallest, but most densely populated province of Canada, well-known for Lucy Maud Montgomery’s (1874–1942) classic children’s book series about
Anne of Green Gables
(11 volumes and a posthumous prequel, plus various adaptations for the theatre, musical, film, and TV, and a theme park in Cavendish, PEI) and the legendary
Cows Creamery
in Charlottetown, the capital, home of the best ice cream in Canada (according to
Reader’s Digest
) and one of the top-10 places for ice cream in the world (according to
Tauck World Discovery
). Marie and I don’t hold stock, but we can confirm the quality of the ice cream from direct personal experience. The more than 32 flavours have cutesy names such as
Gooey Mooey
or
Wowie Cowie
; there is also cow-themed merchandise (for example, we have a
Dr Moo
mug complete with TARDIS) as well as cheese and butter. There is now also a chain of
Cow Creamery
ice cream parlours elsewhere in Canada – not quite as numerous as
Tim Hortons
, where if you stand outside the door you can usually see the next one along the street in both directions, but at least in popular tourist spots such as Banff (Alberta).
