The Green Road is the remains of an older road, running through the crofts and townships of South
Harris. In 1940 the new road was built around the east coast and the old one fell into disuse. The road is
green as it is covered with green turf and moss. The sheep keep the grass cropped short. As children
we thought it a very mysterious and interesting road which led over the hills. In actuality it was the way
our father and his siblings would have travelled in the 1920s on their way to Rodel to catch the boat to
school and university on the mainland.
