The dance was written to capture the spirit of travelling by train with “Dance & Travel”, reflecting the fact that couples would spend time with each other in one compartment, and then move on to talk with other couples in the next.
“Dance and Travel” was the brainchild of Anna Abramova, a teacher of historical dance in Novosibirsk. It consisted of taking a group of “historical dancers” to various cities by overnight train in 3rd class carriages, to join up with similar groups in each new city to hold joint workshops and a final ball. I accompanied them on three trips to teach Scottish country dancing, and it was interesting to see how they progressed from one year to the next.
