A dance and tune for those native to Mercury on meeting their visitors from Earth in Edwin Morgan’s poem,
The First Men on Mercury
.
The dance is complex and involves dancers in the unconventional feature in Country dancing of couples changing sides as the dance progresses. This reflects the way that the men arriving on Mercury and the inhabitants adopt each other’s language and become increasingly difficult to disentangle.
The tune is named after the aliens’ initial greeting and has a simple theme, which becomes gradually altered and more complicated. As Morgan concludes, “but nothing is ever the same, now is it?”
