The Fairy Dance
The music to this dance is better known as “Largo’s Fairy Dance”
and is one of the most famous compositions of Nathaniel Gow (1763–1831), fourth son of Niel Gow.
It was written by Gow in 1802 for the Fife Hunt
and appeared in Niel Gow’s
A Fifth Collection of Strathspey, Reels, etc for the Pianoforte, Harp,
Violin and Violincello
of 1809.
Caroline Eliza Scott (1777–1853) wrote a poem called “The Fairy Dance”.
The first verse gives a sufficient sensing of the other four.
The fairies are dancing – how nimbly they bound!
They flit o’er the grass-tops, they touch not the ground;
Their kirtles of green with diamonds bedight,
All glittering and sparkling beneath the moonlight.
