Inspiration for this dance came whilst stuck on a train platform – waiting and listening to some Elvis tunes. There are a lot of dances where you don’t spend much time with your partner, often called “Schwiegermuttertänze” (“mother-in-law dances”) in German, since you can easily dance them with a person you might not be too fond of, as you won’t see much of them anyway. However, I have always found it quite sad to unknowingly dance one of these dances with a partner you like, as it feels like a wasted opportunity – this was the incentive for Heartbreak Hotel, a dance where you always get close but are only ever allowed to look at your partner and never touch hands until the final turn and twirl away.
