Notes from the deviser: The ‘superorganism’ concept refers to the belief that we can view eusocial colonies (like ants) not as individual organisms but as one collective superorganism. Each individual is working together for the collective, much like each cell in your body is working together to be you.
I chose to write a presentation on superorganisms for a module on social insects in my final year at St Andrews and it struck me that Scottish country dancers form a sort of superorganism while dancing – we all follow our individual paths but are working together to produce a whole complete dance. I wanted to write something to commemorate the collective experience of dancing, but also to celebrate the beauty of social insects.
