This dance commemorates the famous British LNER locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and named after the train it hauled, the Flying Scotsman service. The locomotive was originally a Class A1 design but after upgrades became Class A3. The locomotive bore various numbers including 4472, but was finally numbered 60103 in the era of British Railways.
The dance illustrates the locomotive’s “Pacific” (4-6-2) wheel pattern. Bars 1-4 represent the four wheels of the front bogie, and the loops of the 2s in Bars 5-8 represent the buffers. Bars 9-20 represent the six driving wheels and Bars 21-24 the two trailing wheels of the locomotive. Bars 25-32 allude to the tender, although from early on, the locomotive used tenders with 8 wheels rather than 6, especially corrridor tenders which allowed crew changes on the non-stop runs between London and Edinburgh.
