The dance was devised as a basic dance for teaching the espagnole. It can be done in either strathspey or quick time. In either tempo, the dance can also be done 8 times through: to do this, dance as written with 1s dancing a normal repeat from second place; the next repetition is begun by 3s from the top. After 8 times through, each couple has done two repeats from the top. It’s unusual but a valid progression.
