Stan Hamilton
James Stanley “Stan” Hamilton was born 1928 in Ayrshire as the son of James Stanley “Jimmy” Hamilton – also an SCD musician – and Mary Hamilton of Auchincruive.
Stan played piano, together with his father on fiddle and the accordionist,
Bobby Frew
, and after an audition at the BBC failed to impress in 1957, Stan and Bobby emigrated to Canada, where they started a band together with Freddy Collins (bass) and Donny Woods (drums) and immediately found success – they were even offered a recording contract by RCA. The only thing RCA took exception to was the name of the band,
The Clansmen
; the record company did not want to be associated with the Ku-Klux-Klan and insisted on a name change. This resulted in
Stan Hamilton and the Flying Scotsmen
, for a very long time the most popular Scottish dance band in Canada. In 1961,
Bobby Brown
(not the ex-husband of Whitney Houston) joined as a second accordionist, and eventually left in 1974 to start his own band: He had been offered a lot of gigs for the summer, but Hamilton and Frew only wanted to play in winter.
Stan Hamilton was presented with the Society’s
Scroll of Honour
in 2005 and died on 4 September 2007 (the same day as
Roy Goldring
.
