The notes say this was collected in Orkney.
The Axum Reel
The Axum Reel is from Orkney, a county of sixty-seven islands lying about twenty miles north of
John o’ Groats.
Under the domination of Norway until 1468 when Orkney was ceded to Scotland by Christian I as the
dowry of Margaret when she married James III, the Orcadians speak what is called the North Insular
Lowlands dialect. The Norse language was supplanted by Lowland Scots by incomers from the mainland,
but many Norse words still thrive in the local vocabulary.
“Axum” is “Eightsome”.
