Lady Glasgow
Kelburn Castle, just north of Fairlie on the Ayrshire coast,
is the seat of the Boyle family, the Earls of Glasgow.
The estate was held by the Boyles as early as the 13th century,
but the lofty castle itself dates from the late 16th century.
A large mansion was attached to the original structure in 1700.
Over the former main entry of the castle are the iniitials of John Boyle and Marion Crauford
and the date 1581.
David Boyle was created Lord Boyle of Kelbourne in 1699 and in 1703 Earl of Glasgow.
He was one of the commissioners for promoting the Union of the Parliaments in 1707.
David Boyle’s first wife, whom he married in 1687,
was Margaret Lindsay, elder daughter of the Hon. Patrick Lindsay of Kilburnie,
second son of John, 10th Lord Lindsay of the Byres, 17th Earl of Crawford and 1st Earl of Lindsay.
His second wife was Jane Mure, daughter of WIlliam Mure of Rowallan.
This marriage took place in 1697, two years before he was created earl.
John, 2nd Earl of Glasgow, was born in 1688
and he married Helen Morrison, daughter of William Morrison of Preston Grange.
The third earl, John (1714–1775) was a notable soldier
who was wounded at Fontenoy in 1745 and at Lawfeldt.
In 1755 he married Elizabeth, daughter of George, 12th Lord Ross.
Lady Glasgow died in 1799.
The fourth earl, George (1765–1843) married, first,
Lady Augusta Hay, daughter of James, 15th Earl of Erroll,
and second, Julia Sinclair, daughter of Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster.
James, fifth earl, born in 1792, married Georgiana Ann Hay-Mackenzie in 1821.
