John Macdonald (John of Islay) claimed the title Lord of the Isles around 1336. The title remained in the Macdonald family until 1493 when another John Macdonald was found guilty of treason for plotting with Edward IV of England and the Earl of Douglas. The title of Lord of the Isles was forfeited to the House of Stewart and is now a subsidiary title of the heir apparent to the UK throne.
