Mrs Stewart is usually referred to as co-founder, with Miss Milligan, of the RSCDS. It was Mrs Stewart who had the idea of forming a group to promote the dancing she had known as a girl and who brought together the initial group that was to be so important in creating the SCDS - Miss Milligan; Lord James Stewart Murray (later Duke of Atholl); his sister, Mrs Dorothea Ruggles-Brice and Michael Diack, the music arranger and publisher. Mrs Stewart served as the Society’s first Secretary holding that position for 10 years from the beginning in 1923. She continued to take an active interest in the Society even after her move to South Africa in 1955. She died there in 1968.
