Airdrie
Airdrie is an industrial town in Lanarkshire on the Edinburgh side of Glasgow. In 1670, what was then a farmtoun came into the possession of Robert Hamilton who set about building houses on his land for feuing. Hamilton had an act passed by Parliament in 1695 that made Airdrie a market town. Weekly
markets were held and four fairs took place each year. In later years coalmining and iron-founding
added to Airdrie’s prosperity and it became a burgh in 1821.
