From the notes: The advance and retire represents the ebb and flow of the tide and the circular movements represent the seagulls wheeling round the rocks. The crosses (the wheels) represent St. Ebba and the Christian communities of the district. Each figure should flow into the next representing continuity of life from generation to generation and from century to century.
