The dance is to a tune of the same name by Muriel Rimmer and obviously refers to either spinning or weaving. However, there is some uncertainty as to the specific spinning or weaving involved. The chorus of the Jute Mill Song which refers to weaving in Dundee includes the lines:
Shifting bobbins coorse and fine
They fairly mak’ you work for your ten and nine
This has contributed to a view that the tune for the dance refers to Dundee jute weaving. However, it appears from other sources to be more likely that the composer of the tune was referring to the Lancashire cotton mills.
