Music: There is no specific tune chosen at this time but the dance seems to want an easy moving jig or a gentle strathspey, but not an ‘air’. Notes: I would use the more forgiving strathspey tempo if turn comer and partner were a new (or almost new) figure. This dance was devised for a Robert Bums dance evening. Highland Mary was Mary Campbell of Argyll with whom Bums was going run away to the West Indies. Mary died shortly before they were to sail and is said to have inspired Bums’ song, “Flow Gently Sweet Afton.” (Jo Hamilton)
