The Badger's Sett

New Scotland 50th Anniversary Book
:
This dance was written for Sophia Marriage and presented to her on the occasion of her 25th birthday. It was published in the New Scotland 50th Anniversary Book.
Some useful information from a discussion on the Strathspey list in July 2017:
The dance starts with 1st lady followed by her partner to cast off, finishing in 2nd place on partner’s side, followed by a one and three quarters turn giving left hands.
Robb Quint asked whether the transition should be danced by the lady (a) dancing into the sidelines pulling back right shoulder to face partner or (b) pulling back left shoulder to face in and down to start the left hand turn.
Angus Henry answered that he had checked this with Ian Brockbank in 1997 when the dance was published, and Ian confirmed that the woman was intended to pull right shoulder back.
Please note, there exists a variation on this dance, named “
Gloomy Winter's Noo Awa'
”. Ian Brockbank came up with this modification, because (according to his statement) bars 9-16 didn’t really work when tried with New Scotland and Dunedin – they require too much careful phrasing. However, the dancers from San Gabriel Valley like the original. (For more information on the modified version see the extra information there.)
