The dedication in
Greenburn Book 3
says: A dance For the Golden Wedding of Jim and Rina Grant of Aberdeen.
Furthermore, John Drewry added some notes:
At the end of each tum, except the last, 4th man in second place on the men’s side, and 1 st man in third place on the women’s side, can stay facing out ready to repeat the dance with new end couples.
This dance was requested by Jim and Rina’s daughter Fiona, who now lives in Bristol.
Jim and Rina were married in 1952 in Nigeria, where they were both working. That gave me the idea of the title of this dance.
Haverholme Priory, near Sleaford in lincolnshire, was the home of the Finch-Hattons. It is now a shell because of a disastrous fire.
Denys Finch-Hatton features in Karen Blixen’s book Out of Africa. My sister thinks that our father’s mother worked at the Priory when she was a young girl. She certainly came from that part of lincolnshire and was the same grandmother who claimed a family connection with Sir Isaac Newton.
