Pronounced “A-beg-wait”
Abegweit is the Micmac (now referred to as Mi’kmaq) name for Prince Edward Island and means “cradled upon the waters”.
This dance is one part of a set of three Scottish country dances devised to mark the Canada Winter Games hosted by Prince Edward Island in February 1991 and in support of the Island Tourist Theme for 1991 - The Road to the Isle. The other dances in this set are Midwinter and Marylou’s Reel.
At the request of the PEI Scottish Country Dancers, J. Duncan Keppie composed the tune Rustico for this dance.
